BD’s Mongolian Grill acquires Flat Top Grill

BD’s Mongolian Grill said it has purchased Flat Top Grill as part of a plan to spur growth for both build-your-own stir fry concepts.

The brands will retain their respective names, but operations and marketing for both chains will be managed by BD’s, the buyer said, noting that Flat Top’s current management team will remain the same.

“Asian concepts are one of the fastest-growing segments in the restaurant industry, especially those that allow guests to customize, create and be in control of their dining experience,” Joe Phraner, president and COO of BD’s Mongolian Grill, said in a statement. “Bringing together these two great brands creates a new synergy with tremendous opportunity, which we look forward to developing in the coming months.”

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Flat Top’s parent was bought out of bankruptcy during 2013, and the chain has since attempted to revamp its menu, adding such items as burritos and roti tacos, according to media reports. Though the concept once had 18 units, just eight are currently listed on its website.
