British Magazine Says Ahold Close to Selling U.S. Foodservice

The publication said Royal Ahold, Zandaam, the Netherlands, is close to selling the second largest American distributorship for $5 billion.

However, the magazine said, Peter Wakkie, a member of Ahold's executive board, denied that it is close to signing a deal with any company.

The Business reported that many of the leading private equity firms that had initially expressed an interest in U.S. Foodservice have abandoned pursuing the acquisition.

CDR had been involved in deals with Ahold. It sold one of its Alliant Foodservice division to the Dutch-based retailer in 2001.
