Make room for more fruits and vegetables

The government's recently released 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans puts a strong emphasis on increased consumption of produce. In fact, consumers are encouraged to "make half their plates" fruits and vegetables.

Eating more fruits and vegetables is a key factor in three of the four recommendations made by the Dietary Guidelines Committee:

  • Reducing calorie intake
  • Shifting to a more plant-based diet
  • Reducing consumption of foods with added sugars and solid fats

The latest research from the Produce Marketing Association shows that the cost of fresh produce is more affordable than some have suggested. That's good news for consumers—and operators—who are trying to incorporate the recommended 4.5 cups or 9 servings of fruits and vegetables every day.
