FDI/FMI to discuss alliance possibilities; Block looks down the road to IFDA's Gray as his successor

Food Distributors International (FDI), Church, VA, and the Food Marketing Institute (FMI), Washington, DC, will hold discussions later this year on alliance possibilities, which could put a merger on the table, among other scenarios.

While FDI will hear out FMI's suggestions, any possibility of a merger would be a "tough sell" to FDI's International Foodservice Distributors Association (IFDA) arm, comments John Gray, FDI executive vice president/general counsel and IFDA president. "From a foodservice perspective, IFDA would have to consider seriously whether or not being part of a larger food retail organization is in its best interest."

Separately, FDI's president and ceo, John R. Block indicates he is considering retirement some time after next year. If so, IFDA's Gray will be his successor.
