Restaurants have a love-hate relationship with third-party delivery services.

This week’s episode of the Restaurant Business podcast “A Deeper Dive” covers that relationship. Senior Editor Joe Guszkowski joins the podcast to talk about the issue, including several recent developments in an ongoing battle about charges and other delivery companies' practices.

Third-party delivery thrived during the pandemic and continues to generate strong sales for the biggest players DoorDash, Grubhub and Uber Eats. In many cases they’ve proven vital for restaurants’ survival. Consumers clearly like the service and are willing to pay for it. 

But it remains a small percentage of all restaurant sales, meaning it gets an outsized amount of attention. And as Guszkowski has been reporting this week, there have been a series of developments highlighting the tension between the delivery providers and restaurants. That includes a reclassification of workers in California, local limits on delivery fees and a lawsuit Chicago filed against some providers.
