Why is the grocery business going after the prepared food market so heavily?

To answer this question, the Restaurant Business podcast “A Deeper Dive” sought out Jon Springer, executive editor of sister publication Winsight Grocery Business.

Springer talks about the state of the retail grocery business and its thinking regarding prepared food offerings.

He also talks about the impact that Amazon’s purchase of Whole Foods has had on that market, or lack thereof, and what that could mean for restaurants. And he talks about the industry’s shift to technology, and whether delivery will play a major role in its prepared food business.

There are a lot of similarities between the grocery business and restaurants: Technology is requiring more investment at an uncertain benefit, which is favoring larger companies and could push more companies to consolidate. The restaurant industry could learn quite a bit from the experience of grocers.
