ID NEWS: Sysco cites record week, continuing momentum

Sysco Corp., Houston, has announced record sales of $577.6 million for the week ended May 10, 2003.

"Mother's Day is one of the most popular days of the year for people to enjoy meals that are prepared away from home and often results in a record sales week for Sysco," comments Richard J. Schnieders, Sysco chairman and ceo.

"The National Restaurant Association estimates that approximately 38% of the population treats Mom to a meal away from home on her special day."

Real growth for the first six weeks of the $25-billion broadliner's fourth quarter increased 7.6%, as compared with the equivalent period last year, Schnieders adds. This figure excludes a 1.8% gain through recent acquisitions and 0.8% growth attributable to inflation, from a total sales increase of 10.2% for the period. "We are at the mid-point of the final quarter for our fiscal year 2003, and we have been able to build on the momentum that we developed during the third quarter."
