Mad Cow Update: Technomic Does Not Expect Negative Impact on '04 Growth

NEW YORK - Technomic, Inc., the Chicago-based industry analyst, does not expect the first discovery of Mad Cow disease in America to have a negative impact on the foodservice industry's anticipated growth next year.

Gary Karp, vice president, told ID Report that the most significant detrimental influence would be on beef exporters. "Countries that import products from us have now closed their borders to us. That will have a dampening effect on the product," Karp said.

Likening the discovery of the Mad Cow-afflicted cow in Washington State to “an incident of an extremely, extremely rare disease,” Karp noted that educational efforts of the USDA
