Danny Meyer-backed pizzeria Martina has closed, about 18 months after the fast casual-turned full service restaurant opened in New York City.

The restaurant, which began life as a fast casual in 2017 before pivoting to full service, closed Sunday, according to Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group.

“Despite numerous efforts to turn Martina’s financial performance around—including a recent service-style change—we were not able to succeed at developing a large enough audience to sustain the business,” Meyer said in a statement.

It’s rare for Meyer’s team to shutter restaurants, though it has happened: Previous closures include North End Grill and GreenRiver.

Martina tried to redefine the fast-casual pizza segment with elevated ingredients and an expanded menu of starters and drinks.

Union Square Hospitality Group officials are trying to find jobs for Martina’s employees at the group’s other restaurants, according to Meyer’s statement.
