Delivery by the numbers

Delivery is just a small portion of the off-premise market, but it’s growing at a rapid clip—both in terms of consumer demand and operator execution. Right now, the off-premise market makes up 44% of all restaurant sales, on-premise makes up 56%.

The rest of the off-premise market includes catering, drive-thru and takeout, off-site sales from vending, kiosks and branded retail extensions, and the consumer direct channel that includes meal kits and ghost restaurants.

Two in ten consumers say delivery is key in creating good value from limited-service restaurants; 13% say the same from full-service restaurants.

Other third-party companies have also seen large growth. Postmates has gone from 107 to 230 cities, and UberEats is now in 45 cities, up from 10. DoorDash has also expanded the number of restaurants; it’s gone from delivering for 6,200 restaurants to 54,000.

Consumers are clearly buying into third-party delivery. Right now, the third-party delivery scene heavily sways full-service. Some 34% of restaurants delivered via third-party are casual-dining brands, and 14% are family-style restaurants. Just over a quarter are fast casual, and 21% are fast-food brands.

Just 16% of consumers rank the restaurant brand as their primary consideration when deciding where to order from. Some 44% say it’s a consideration.

American is the top cuisine order from third-party delivery companies, while Italian is the most prominent traditional delivery order. Some 39% of orders via third-party services include an entree. More than half (54%) of traditional delivery orders are for pizza.
