NORMAN (March 2, 2011)—Sysco Corporation has approved an expansion of its distribution facility in Norman, Okla.
Sysco, Oklahoma president Chris Davis said the expansion will accommodate current and future foodservice business. The construction will add approximately 100,000 square feet of temperature-zoned warehouse space and additional truck parking.
Davis said Sysco has selected Stellar Corporation of Jacksonville, Fla., as the design builder for the construction pending contract approvals. The project is anticipated to be completed within one year.
“Norman is delighted that Sysco Corporation has made this decision to expand its operations in our community,” said Mayor Cindy Rosenthal. “This is a significant project and investment.”
She pledged to help make the process go smoothly and called Sysco a “great corporate citizen.”
Sysco is a global leader in selling, marketing and distributing food products to restaurants, healthcare and educational facilities, lodging establishments and other customers who prepare meals away from home. The company’s products also include equipment and supplies for the foodservice and hospitality industries.
The company operates 180 distribution facilities serving approximately 400,000 customers. For the fiscal year 2010 that ended July 3, 2010 the company generated more than $37 billion in sales.
Norman Chamber of Commerce President Tom Sherman, reached in Washington, D.C., on the chamber’s annual trip, said any kind of business expansion is good news in today’s economic climate.
“Any announcement is encouraging when it has the potential to create new jobs,” Sherman said. “The fact that it’s a company that is already operating in Norman is also exciting.”
“ This announcement is good news,” said Don Wood, executive director of the Norman Economic Development Coalition. “It shows Sysco’s commitment to grow and expand in our community to better serve the area.”
“I think in return the community should recognize the contribution that Sysco is making and should protect their use of that property for many years to come.”
