Upper Lakes Foods Joins Pro*Act

Upper Lakes Foods, No. 28 on the ID Top 50 list, is Minnesota's largest independent distributorship. Founded in 1967 by the late Larry Sorensen, Upper Lakes is a family owned and operated company with Steven Sorensen, who took over as president at the death of his father earlier this year.

Upper Lakes has facilities in Rhinelander, WI, a sales office in Spring Lake Park, MN and headquarters in Cloquet, MN. The company employs more than 375 people and distributes over 14,000 products in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Upper Michigan, northern Iowa and eastern North Dakota.

"Upper Lakes Foods is a key addition to Pro*Act and one of the premier foodservice distributors in its market. By adding this outstanding company, we have expanded our distribution base and our foodservice market coverage. We have also solidified our position as the leader in foodservice perishables distribution. Pro*Act now encompasses 44 distributor specialists operating out of 68 distribution centers throughout the United States and Canada," Lloyd Ligier, vice president of business development of the group, stated.

Sorensen stated, "Pro*Act will provide substantial resources to help achieve our goals of providing the highest level of quality, value, information and ideas for growth to help our customers succeed. The extensive field knowledge, networking resources from 44 produce partners, advanced IT solutions, product safety standards, and unequaled produce purchasing leverage within Pro*Act will build our competitive advantage into the future."

Also a member of UniPro, Upper Lakes Foods has a staff of 40 DSRs, who contributed to the company's $155 million in sales last year. It is well known for its popular mobile demo kitchen, which can visit 25-30 current or potential operators a week.
