The week in ideas, August 5, 2013

This week we spotlight a bear with a great idea, two takes on cell phones and a new map you will either love or hate.

Idea #1: Tie down your dumpster. Check out the internet’s newest celebrity: the bear that walked away with a restaurants dumpster.

Idea #2: Cell phones are the new cigarettes. Actually, we can’t decide what the new cigarette is: sodas or cell phones. For now, we’ll say cell phones. A new L.A. restaurant has banned cell phone use from the restaurant and allows their use only in designated outdoor areas. Remind you of anything?

Idea #4: Cell phones are your new friends. Before you follow that L.A. restaurant’s lead, take a look at a new study. Published in the journal Psychological Science, new research suggests that posting an image of a dish to Instagram before digging in may make it taste better.

Idea #5: Map restaurant inspections. The Guardian newspaper in England has installed a new Google Map on its site that shows all the areas restaurants and their inspection grades.
