What began in 2008 as the Van Leeuwen Ice Cream truck selling cones on the streets of New York, has evolved into a scoop shop chain numbering 54 locations and counting. Headquarters are still in Brooklyn, New York, but Van Leeuwen is scooping ice cream as far away as California, Texas and Colorado, with Florida next on the expansion map.The super-premium ice cream brand has a flavor roster that includes regulars like vanilla bean, mint chip and cookies & cream, but Van Leeuwen also offers "shock" flavors now and then. Idaho Potato Malted Milkshake & Fries was one, and Hidden Valley Ranch another.Online reviews point out that the ice cream is on the pricey side, but it's made with high-quality ingredients in relatively small batches with CEO Ben Van Leeuwen overseeing production. Sales last year totaled $47 million, increasing almost 48% year over year. The truck is still in operation but only for special events.
